Quadriceps Strength After Injury/Surgery
Quadricep muscles are part of the front compartment of the thigh, dedicated to straightening the knee. Their implications for walking, running, jumping, and kicking are enormous.
Weakness of the quadriceps is often seen in knee rehabilitation, especially in those recovering from injury or surgery. Regaining functional strength is key to the rehabilitation process.
Here, you can see that Rachelle’s leg has a slight quadriceps lag compared to her operated knee.
Step-ups can be an excellent way to strengthen the quadriceps and hip muscles that provide stability in single-leg stance.
In this example, her physiotherapist Scott is getting her to toe-touch the back leg during the step-down phase, forcing her stance leg to focus on endurance, strength, and control.
Due to her left quadriceps presenting weakness post-surgery, you can see the compensation with her hips and narrower base of support. This is corrected by getting more activity from her quadriceps with the use of a band.
Recovering from an injury or surgery takes time. But having the right guidance saves you time, energy, and provides peace of mind.
