Hervé Télémaque moved to New York City in 1957 to pursue abstract painting at the age of 20 when Haitian President François Duvalier came to power and Abstract Expressionism was in its waning years. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The artist found America to be a deeply segregated society while working in New York. This difficult social reality began to register in early abstract paintings like "Othello #1" (1960) and turned the abstract painter’s desire back to the textures and problems of everyday life. ⁣⁣ ⁣ "Hervé Télémaque: 1959–1964" explores this turbulent period for the artist, whose style evolved rapidly in New York, and later in Paris, where the artist moved in the 1960s and resided until his death in November 2022.⁣ On view at ICA Miami through April 30, 2023. _____⁣ (1,3,4) Hervé Télémaque, "Othello #1," 1960, oil on canvas, 66 x 88 in.
