David Shongo: From Dead to Living Memory
Composer and contemporary artist David Shongo* from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will present his first solo exhibition in Belgium, From Dead to Living Memory, opening the 22nd March 2025 @tommysimoensgallery Antwerp.
Through immersive art, sound, and film, Shongo explores themes of collective memory, trauma, and the ongoing impact of colonialism. His work invites us to reflect on how memory—both personal and collective—continues to shape the present, with a particular attention to the actual situation and the ongoing war in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Shongo will expose its personal view of memory through several pieces of art such as Cafe Kuba, Botanique des Morts (Botany of the Dead), the Blackout Poetry Series and Silkscreen Paintings: Dead Memory & Living Memory.
From Dead to Living Memory is a powerful reflection on colonialism’s legacy, the trauma of the past, and the “living memory” that shapes our world today.
