The Japanese practice of ōsōji (大掃除) originates from an ancient tradition called “soot sweeping.” In a time when wood-burning fireplaces were needed to warm the home and candles to light rooms after dark, each year’s end was concluded with the susu-harai. Any dust and dirt was swept away with special dusters and brooms as a sort of year-end ceremony in the home. Though a chore, it is seen in Japanese culture as a form of peace and liberation not only for our spaces but also for our minds. As we reach into 2023, let us clear our homes of the clutter and chaos, making space for deep breaths and new opportunities. #nickeykehoe #osoji #cleaningmotivation #declutter
