Whoo! There's nothin' like summer in the ... Saturn? Wait, that’s not how the song goes. 🤔
This 2019 view of Saturn from the Hubble Space Telescope shows the gas giant in the middle of its seven-year summer in the Northern Hemisphere! With its trademark rings tilted toward Earth, we can see the hexagon-shaped bands of clouds at its North Pole.
Saturn's appearance changes with its seasons, which occur because Saturn's equator is tilted 27 degrees with respect to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. The Earth, similarly, has seasons because our planet is tilted by about 23.5 degrees.
Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 observed Saturn on June 20, 2019, as the planet was near its closest approach to Earth, at about 845 million miles away.

ALT-TEXT: A view of Saturn from the Hubble Space Telescope captures exquisite details of the ring system, which looks like a white phonograph record with grooves that represent detailed structure within the rings. The planet is shown in shades of light brown and yellow, with horizontal bands. It’s set against the black background of space.
