👵 Every week, Tamar Fasja Unikel’s (@tfasja) grandmother Ruth would welcome 20 or so family members to her home in Mexico City for Shabbat lunch. “It’s what I miss most about growing up in Mexico,” Tamar, who now lives in Chicago and co-owns Masa Madre Bakery (@hellomasamadre), says. 🥗 🌎 Ruth’s parents emigrated from Aleppo in the early 1900s and eventually Mexican ingredients and dishes were woven into the family’s cooking, creating a new repertoire, reflected in Ruth’s Saturday table. A family favorite is kibbeh charola, a classic Middle Eastern recipe for baked ground beef and bulgur which Ruth serves with Mexican accompaniments. 🧆 🥑 “You take a piece or two and add avocado, tahini, and salsa,” Tamar explains. Together it is a taste of her family. 🔗 Link in bio for Tamar’s family recipes and story. 📸: @pennydelossantos 🥗: @judyhaubert 🍽: @marianavelasquezv
