I feel so defensive talking about my Mum, her cancer and her death. There’s such a taboo in our society to talk about those who die, let alone from cancer. We’re inundated with slogans like “let’s beat cancer” where it makes our that cancer is some sort of battle or duel between the cells and the persons body. It makes out that those who didn’t beat cancer are weak or just weren’t good enough at the battle or game. When those who die of cancer pass, their stories and memories are shrunk into that of taboo or awkwardness, they rarely receive the “wow they’re amazing and incredible” the same way that cancer survivors do. On days like today where I’m forced to think about my mum, her life and her death, I want to use it as an opportunity to share with people how incredible she was. Her strength shouldn’t be diminished because she died. In fact, I truly believe there’s something to be said about people with cancer who cross the border and make it to the other side, knowing that they’re going to leave their family and loved ones behind. In my opinion, they are the strongest of them all.
love you mumma ❤️
