Perhaps one of the most challenging whales to spot in Southern California is the Sperm whale. Not only is their presence very rare to begin with, but they are known to submerge for dives that can last between 30 to 90 minutes and descend thousands of feet below the surface. For the average boat motoring along, it’s easy to see how you could unknowingly pass over this remarkable animal. That’s why, when traveling up the Malibu coastline the other day, we were shocked to see this sperm whale surface nearby! Serendipitously, an hour long delay to our departure meant that we were in the right place at the right moment when the whale decided to come up for air. Talk about lucky!
This is the same sperm whale we encountered several weeks ago near Palos Verdes, that later was spotted near Anacapa Island. Looks like he’s still enjoying the coastal squid buffet!
