We are in the enchanted summer residence of Queen Margherita. Built at the behest of Queen Margherita of Savoy, who had been spending her summers at Gressoney-Saint-Jean since 1889, the castle is located in the place called Belvedere from where it dominates the entire valley up to the Lyskamm glacier. Despite the local grey stone giving it a rather sombre appearance externally, the interior is richly decorated with paintings, wood paneling and medieval inspired furniture. Designed by the architect Emilio Stramucci, head of the Ufficio tecnico della Real Casa, the castle appears as a grandiose, eclectic “fin du siècle” exercise.
