The photographer William Klein died on September 10 in Paris. The photography legend was behind some of the most powerful fashion shots photographed for the different editions of Vogue. This American, who moved to Paris after the war, shaped the world of photography with a cult series centered around New York in 1956. He took on a blurry, ambivalent approach, breaking away from the established practises of the time. He progressed from the streets to the fashion world, then moved onto cinema, notably directing the cult film, “Who Are You, Polly Magoo?” a parody of the fashion world. Later, he covered his photographs and negatives with paintings, to bring them new life, with the style becoming a new artistic signature of his. At 96 years old, he leaves behind a prolific œuvre, and goes down in history as one of the greats of photography. Vogue pays tribute to him.
