“Strength and display were the pillars of Mugler’s work,” @vogue wrote following his death in January 2022. “His archetype was an Amazonian woman, commanding and in command, but still with a sense of humor and flirtatiousness.”⁠ ⁠ Born in Strasbourg, France in the late 1940s, Mugler was the son of a doctor and a couture-wearing mother, who Mugler stated was his first muse. From the age of nine, Mugler studied classical dance before joining the Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin at fourteen. During his teen years, he studied at the Ecole superieure des arts decoratifs, Strasbourg.⁠ ⁠ In his early 20s, Mugler began designing clothing for boutiques in London, Paris, Milan, and Barcelona before creating his first personal collection in 1973, titled “Café de Paris.” In the nearly 50 years to follow in his career, Thierry Mugler would solidify his impact as an edgy, architectural designer and creative director with an intimate understanding of the body, and an extensive knowledge of materials and production.
