Notes from visiting the Roxbury Neighborhood, specifically the former home of Ella Little-Collins and, for a short period during his developmental years, her brother Malcolm X.
(I also saw the South End Neighborhood.)
- Walking the same grounds as historical figures you’ve read about >
- Seeing the word “Nubian” as the official name of a transit hub and business district full of Black and Brown folks is empowering.
- The red brick makes the colors in the murals pop.
- There’s diversity within the Black community; one time for the diaspora.
- Ella Little-Collins and Malcolm X lived at 72 Dale st. Four blocks up from there is one of Boston’s Oakland streets (there’s two).
- Stopped to watch someone do Tai Chi in a park as the leaves fell. Time well spent.
- Briefly posted at the Roxbury branch of the Boston public library. If I lived there, I’d probably live there.
- For those who are able to, the city is walkable. And the city’s bike program seems to be working pretty well. (I didn’t see any scooter rental programs, thankfully.)
