They say good things come in threes and I think they may be right; I got to see my first Baird’s beaked whales ever yesterday! They are the largest members of the elusive beaked whale family and a rare sight in Southern California. While encounters with beaked whales are usually brief, this pod of 8 (one not pictured) remained near the surface for over an hour! They meandered over to the boat a handful of times, made some silly sounds above the water, and even gave us a few spyhops. Searching for wildlife in the offshore waters can be feast or famine; we felt very lucky to have succeeded in our efforts to locate a pod of this bizarre species almost 100 miles out!
