They are such an important part of my story and I of theirs and it was so satisfying to share our deep love for each other in front of the world--particularly given the content of the musical, which has confused many about the truth of our relationship.” What advice would you go back and give yourself on Day 1 of your #StrangeLoopBway journey? “I would have listened to the song ‘Boundaries’ even more deeply than I do now. It has multiple applications and great lessons that it teaches if you really listen. ‘I can't know freedom without clear boundaries.’ That's not a read, it's just a fact, as Dorian Corey once said.” What will you miss most about your time with #StrangeLoopBway? “I'll miss the newness of having broken so much artistic ground with such joy and audacity with everyone involved in the making of the show. I'll miss watching the cast let everybody have it with both barrels every night. I'll miss the initial collaborations with everyone across the board.” What do you hope the legacy of #StrangeLoopBway will be? “I hope the legacy of the show is both its fearlessness and its vulnerability. Liz Phair, whose song ‘Strange Loop’ inspired me for so many years as I wrote the show wrote the lyric ‘the fire you like so much in me is the mark of someone adamantly free’ that I constantly come back to in life and in art. In my song ‘A Strange Loop,’ I wrote in response: ‘sometimes I feel so ugly, sometimes I feel so smart, some people stand together, me, well I stand apart.’ I hope that the legacy of the show is that artistically, it stands apart--duly noted. I hope the legacy of the show is that it chose anti-establishment artistry and coolness in a politically and culturally shallow time when others were clamoring and thirsting for clicks, retweets, and empty popularity.”
