Less then two weeks until race day for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Coming into this I’ve spent some time rewatching old races from national heroes of the sport like Kashi Leuchs, Mike Northcott, Clinton Avery and Stu Houltham. I grew up idolising these guys and, among others, they played a massive role in shaping the generation of today. A funny story, back when I was a kid Mike Northcott was lapping me twice over at a national cup (numerous races ran at the same time). As he blasted past I yelled “go Mr Northcott!”, I couldn’t believe the speed he was carrying past. After the podium he gave me a hand pump that he won, a black Giant pump with yellow ends. I chewed the ears off dad the next two weeks of how great Mike was, moments like that inspired the bare foot farm boy to chase dreams. We are living in a golden era of New Zealand Mountain Biking, and it’s an honour to represent the Silver Fern once again. Let’s go to work @thenzteam 👊🏼
