Why, hello, gorgeous! 🤩 This image shows the Webb Space Telescope’s First Deep Field in two types of light: mid-infrared at left and near-infrared at right.
The near-infrared image may feel more familiar since its awash in galaxies and stars with bright diffraction spikes. At left, the colors tell us a lot about their contents!
Blue dots without spikes are galaxies that lack dust to form new stars. Red objects are enshrouded in dust—and could be stars or galaxies. (Research just began on July 12, so we’ll learn a lot more very soon!)
Galaxies’ sizes in both images offer clues as to how distant they may be: The smaller the object, the more distant it is. In mid-infrared light, galaxies that are closer appear whiter.
What about those awesome arcs? These are galaxies that are stretched and magnified by gravitational lensing. They appear blue in the mid-infrared at left and orange in near-infrared at right. These galaxies are older and have much less dust.
