Shaving ads convinced me that happiness was only achievable with smooth legs. The p0r* industry led me to believe that pubic hair was unattractive and strangers on the internet told me I was less of a women for embracing my body hair.
I use to feel immense pressure to remove my body hair. I was conditioned to think body hair was shameful and therefore I needed to shave away my shame. I’m sure we’ve all had a moment in our life’s we’re we’ve thought we ‘had’ to shave to avoid being shamed by our peers, partners and probably even strangers. My first introduction to shaving happened one day at my school swimming carnival. I was casually walking to my school bag to collect my lunch when a group of older girls starting laughing and pointing at me. Much to my embarrassment I thought I had sat in mud but as I looked down nothing out of the ordinary stood out. Then one of them said
“Your legs are so hairy! It’s disgusting. Haven’t you ever shaved before”. I hurried away with tears in my eyes and shame in my mind. I went home that afternoon, grabbed the first razor I saw and removed my body hair vowing to never be caught with an unshaven body again. Until now.
It’s time we understand that body hair removal is a choice not a necessity. It’s time we stop referring to body hair as unhygienic, shameful, wrong and gross. Body hair is a completely normal part of being human. It’s your choice to remove your body hair and if removing it makes you feel good then keep doing it but let’s not shame other women for choosing to embrace theirs.
