I am someone who by textbook definition is not Jewish but by many, many cultural associations is Jewish. My birth name is Michael David Quattlebaum Jr. It is both a Hebrew and a Yiddish name. The Quattlebaum family were Jewish slave owners in South Carolina, originally coming over on ships as old as the Mayflower and my great, great, great grandfather in the sharecropping antebellum south converted his entire family to a church of African American origin based on the tenets of Judaism. I didn’t have a bar mitzvah, but I grew up celebrating Passover, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah and many of the high holidays. I am in so many ways raised within the veil of Judaism. As a Jew of color who has experienced racism from other Jewish people - there is no room ever for Antisemitism. The “are you really Jewish” question stings as much as any antisemitic slur. I hope there is room for us to think about it all. As a Jew of color - ALL OF IT HURTS, EQUALLY TO ME
