Senales Cultural Association Interview Formafantasma, Oltre Terra NAM Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo NO Formafantasma recorded and conducted a series of interviews as a means of creating a continuous dialogue with practitioners from a variety of fields of expertise, such as universities, museums, cultural associations, and shepherds. All the interviews, together with other research material, will soon be available in a dedicated website. Georg Kaser has been professor of Climate and Cryosphere Science at the University of Innsbruck, and lead author and reviewer for three consecutive editions of the IPCC assessment report. He is currently vice-president of the FWF, the Austrian Fund for Scientific Research, and also vice-president of the Senales Cultural Association. In this interview, he discusses how the association was formed and what its goals and activities are. The Senales Cultural Association was founded more than 25 years ago, with the aim of actively participating in local cultural life. In addition to preserving and maintaining the cultural heritage of the Schnalstal valley and intellectual exchange beyond its borders, the association has always been committed to keeping cultural and artistic activities alive. Since 2012, the Senales Cultural Association has joined the Heimatpflegeverband union of the province, thus assuming the functions of an association for the protection of the environment and local traditions. The culture and preservation of the ancient cultural landscape of the valley, the careful management of local heritage assets and folk culture in general have always been the central interests of the association. The ancient seasonal migration of sheep across the Alpine watershed from the Schnalstal valley to the Ötztal valley is inscribed in 2019 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The application had been submitted by the Senales Cultural Association, in cooperation with the Austrian cultural initiative Pro Vita Alpina.
