This is one of my all time favourite photos. It’s of my brother Ben in the mountains of Afghanistan just months after the twin towers fell, extracting from a long range reconnaissance patrol with SASR. It was back before Multicam, there’s no Kevlar body armour, and I remember doing the rounds of Perth skate shops with him prior to his deployment to find a Protec helmet to mount NVG on, as the unit didn’t have any to issue. I also remember him picking up his pack from a local guy who had modified it with extra pouches to accommodate the huge loads they would need to carry. It was images like these that kept the motivational fire burning in my belly from when I first set my sights on joining special operations in 2001, until I finally had the chance to do selection in 2008. If you have an ambitious goal, I recommend you write out your ‘ignition story’ (being the spark that made you want to pursue the goal - you can read mine in my book The Combat Doctor) in as much detail and with as much emotion as possible, and then collect images and videos that help fuel your motivation.
