Can awe change the way we see the world? Two new books think perhaps it can.
In 'Awe' the social psychologist Dacher Keltner argues that cultivating a sense of awe in our daily lives, such as looking up at the night sky or listening to great music, helps us to feel a profound sense of connection to others, and to a vast universe. That way, he believes, lies the path to health and happiness.
Animal behaviourist Ashley Ward takes a more conventional approach to elevating the ordinary in 'Sensational'. By exploring the science underlying the five senses, which we so often take for granted, he demonstrates the exceptional faculties of the human animal. Each writer, in their very different way, analyses an aspect in the evolution of our species and productively encourages the reader to look at life afresh.
