givin ‘FNF’ summer energy (s/o @hitkidd), i put together some of my fav 90s underground memphis rap tracks from the region’s best unsung heroes (w/ a sprinkle of houston, texas with dj screw tracks).
big gangsta pimp talk on this one. sure to get u crunk.
(warning: nerd alert lol) most of these features tracks can be characterized as low budget bedroom studio recordings, using repetitive vocal hooks and distorted lo-fi soundscapes that utilize drum machines and minimal synth melodies. some of these jams feature double time + triplet flows, and routinely use samples ranging from soul and funk (my fav) to film scores and classical music. alongside a strong drum pattern were also cowbells, syncopated rhythms, powerful sub-bass, and sharp digital snares — all elements becoming the hallmarks of the 90s memphis rap sound. looping over chopper edits is also a signature.
