Make way! These adorable ducklings, drawn in pencil and charcoal, pose in different positions across the pages of a sketchbook once belonging to Robert McCloskey (American, 1914-2003). McCloskey authored the iconic children’s book Make Way for Ducklings in 1941, and was awarded the Caldecott Medal the following year for “the most distinguished American picture book for children.”
The characters in Make Way evolved from McCloskey’s original sketches of these ducklings and ducks, drawn from life while they resided in his New York City apartment bathtub. While we hope the “models” found their way to a nice pond, these drawings made their way to BPL when the author gifted four of his sketchbooks to the BPL in the 1960s.
