It's my stop on the Random Things blog tour for A Corruption of Blood by Ambrose Parry, the pen name of husband and wife writing duo, Chris Brookmyre and Dr Marisa Haetzman. A Corruption of Blood is the third in the Will Raven and Sarah Fisher mystery series and whilst you don't have to have read the previous two books (The Way of All Flesh and The Art of Dying) it is a brilliant historical fiction series that I highly recommend, so you should definitely read them all. You're welcome. (And yes, I do also own this book in hardback.) This was another wonderful addition to the series which, for me, just gets better and better. One of the things I love most about it is that it's the perfect blend of fact and historical fiction, delving deep into the dark and seedy underbelly of Victorian Edinburgh. I find the medical elements absolutely fascinating (despite having absolutely no scientific prowess at all) and on top of all that, there is a complex mystery to solve 🤯 I've really enjoyed witnessing the character arc of Raven develop over the course of the series, however it is Fisher who I've been most invested in - an intelligent, fearless woman, held back in society purely on the basis of her gender, yet determined to make her mark on the medical world. Thank god for the Sarahs of history who paved the way for women. The perfect blend of medicine and mystery, A Corruption of Blood might be my favourite of the series so far. Clearly extremely well-researched, highly atmospheric and with characters who really come to life, this is a series that I cannot recommend enough. I'm truly hoping this isn't the end of Raven and Fisher. TW: themes including rape and child abuse. A Corruption of Blood is out now in paperback.
