Val Senales-Ötzal transhumance
Formafantasma, Oltre Terra NAM Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo NO
Val Senales stretches over a few short kilometres to the glacier-covered mountain tops of the Ötzal Alps. Thanks to its diverse and distinctive natural and cultural landscape, the Schnals Valley is one of the most fascinating valleys in the entire Alps. The discovery of Ötzi, the 5,300 year old glacier mummy, and the annual driving of sheep - the transhumance - over the main ridge of the Alps, are proof that hunters and shepherds have been travelling through this valley for thousands of years.
The Val Senales-Ötzal transhumance is still practiced and deeply rooted in local tradition. This annual migration of sheep is the only cross-border and trans-glacial transhumance in existence. Every June, shepherds lead flocks of 3,000-4,000 sheep on a mass migration from Vernago and Maso Corto across two mountain passes to the fertile pastures of Vent in neighboring Austria. Shepherds and sheep dogs lead the flocks back to Val Senales on a safer return trip in mid-September. Transhumance ends with the celebration of the successful completion of the migration.
