This week on #regularsoftherover - Jay and Clay have been loyal regulars for nearly two decades. The shutdown in 2020 due to the pandemic didn't stop them from making sure they still made it up to The Rover on Friday night. When The Rover was doing carryout only, we could still count on their order printing out in the kitchen every Friday night, even if we had to put up our bar stools for a while. "It's been eighteen years now. We started coming on Friday nights, eighteen years ago, when we moved into our house in Saint Mathews. Even though we've moved to the Highlands, we still come every Friday night. We've graduated from tables to the bar seat. We used to have favorite waiters and waitresses, but now we have favorite bartenders. When our family comes into town, this is the one place they all have to come to as well, his side or my side. They know that we love to come here, but my brother will also usually ask to come several times while they're in town. Rover takeout on Friday nights made us able to survive the covid shutdown and the pandemic. Every Friday night, it was the only thing to look forward to. We braved the outdoor patio in the cold, we sat around the fire sometimes. We made sure we sat outside while we waited for our food, and had a beer usually. We wanted to make sure that The Rover survived. We have our regular orders: the best things, hands down: get yourself an order of cordon bleu fritters, get yourself a scotch egg. He always gets fish and chips, he likes his fish a little crispy and I like to do the rover chicken with double veg and no champ. For dessert, we usually order the trifle because it's so big you can split it and still feel like you had a dessert and more. We love that Michael Reidy always comes up and tells us a joke on Friday nights. Sometimes we understand what he's saying, other times we just laugh when he laughs. Every Friday night is a special night. We look forward to it, I tell my students at school Friday night is date night and they always know we go to The Rover.
