Xiǎo Hán (小寒) — Minor Cold ⛄️ welcoming the 23rd of the 24 seasonal points, when Yin begins to retreat and Yang is being reborn.
The ancient Chinese observed and named this upcoming period "Xiǎo Hán" and "Dà Hán" (Minor Cold and Major Cold respectively), corresponding to January and February, the coldest months in the northern hemisphere.
The general #YangSheng guidance is similar to the Winter Solstice: nourish the kidneys, protect the spleen and stomach, and keep your body warm.
TO EAT
Since we are coming out of holiday feasting, it's a good time to cut back on heavy foods and eat things that are easier to digest.
🍲 Warming congee, stews, or soups are perfect for keeping your Spleen and Stomach happy right now.
🖤 Strengthen the Kidneys with black-colored foods like sesame, mushrooms, rice, lentils, beans, seaweed, figs, and garlic.
🙅 If you have arthritis in your joints that gets worse in cold weather, avoid foods that cause cold dampness like tropical fruits, oranges, and refined sugar.
🔥 If you are experiencing inner coldness or Yang deficiency, avoid naturally cold foods like duck, chrysanthemum, mint, or milk. Instead, warm up your Yang with cinnamon, ginger, chicken, or lamb.
TO DO
🛌 Prioritize rest by sleeping early and rising with the sun.
♨️ Keep your ears, neck, and feet warm by covering up appropriately when outside and taking foot/full body baths.
🧘 Gentle exercises that doesn't cause excessive sweating. Walking, standing, or lying down meditation is appropriate to do during this time to improve circulation, strengthen Qi, and warm your meridians.
😌 Take care of your mental health. Irritability, anger, and negative emotions increase Liver Fire, leading to dizziness, headache, and tinnitus.
