Going to start highlighting my favorite remedies for the most common concerns I see in my clinic!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First on deck I’m tackling itchy, flaky scalp - often due to a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, also known as dandruff. Here are some ingredients to try (all available without a prescription!):
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
➡️ Zinc Pyrithione - rinse-off product with anti-fungal activity. Example: @officialvanicream Dandruff Shampoo
➡️ Hydrocortisone - a low-potency topical steroid that works as an anti-inflammatory agent. Example: Scalpicin Scalp Itch Relief
➡️ Selenium Sulfide - stronger option as compared to zinc pyrithione with both anti-fungal and anti-keratolytic activity. Example: Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength Dandruff Defense
➡️ Salicylic Acid - a known keratolytic agent which breaks down dead skin cells to help target stubborn scales and flakes. Example: MG217 Shampoo
➡️ Coal Tar - helps to slow skin cell turnover resulting in flaking. Example: @neutrogena TGel Therapeutic Shampoo
➡️ Ketoconazole - a great anti-fungal agent with activity against Malassezia furfur, a yeast thought to play a role in dandruff. Example: @nizoralofficial Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If these don’t work, it may be time to see a board-certified dermatologist to discuss prescription treatments. Hope someone learned something! What condition would you like to see next??
