Michel Majerus’ work is prescient for the way he explored varied interpretations of capitalism and cultural imperialism as they relate to American culture. Working at the threshold of the 21st-century, Majerus explored his passion for technology, youth culture, and art history in many works.⁣ ⁣ The artist’s investigations of pop culture and commercial icons are on full display in “overdose” (1997), a massive painting depicting a laundry detergent box, an ice cream wrapper, Woody from “Toy Story,” and other noticeable icons collaged together. ⁣ ⁣ Majerus often referenced the 1995 Pixar blockbuster. “Toy Story” was the first feature film created entirely using computer animation and its characters were symbols without references. Woody, the jealous yet likable striver, was a compelling subject to the artist. ⁣ ⁣ “Michel Majerus: Progressive Aesthetics” is the first museum survey for the artist, and is curated by @AlexGartenfeld, Artistic Director, and @StphSdl, Curator.⁣⁣ On view through March 12, 2023.
