One of the worst things about platforms such as these is they have created windows into other lives where people are encouraged to share the best “highlight” reels of their lives. It’s created opportunity for feelings of envy to run wild. Especially for young people who have not yet developed enough of a world view to realize there will always be people further along the path. Always a bigger fish. Always someone who has more. They don’t yet have the ability to look at this as a source of inspiration instead of pain. I have long admired Charlie Munger. I think he is one of the most rational thinkers of our time. One of my favorite quotes by him is this one - “Envy is a really stupid sin because it’s the only one you could never possibly have any fun at. There’s a lot of pain and no fun. Why would you want to get on that trolley?” I think about this any time I start to even think about comparing myself to someone else. The unlock for me has been to do my absolute best to only compare myself to who I was yesterday. This has created immense happiness in my life. If we constantly look to others for validation and to measure our own success, we will be constantly disappointed with what we find. If instead we measure against what we have improved upon since yesterday, we will always be happy. Remember this next time envy creeps into the mind.
