#textiletuesdays : In 2017, after 10 years of two full-time styling jobs; 3 days a week spent in malls sourcing and dealing with 100s of pieces each season- I was visually spent.
.
Poly blends felt too coarse, I took off all wall hangings and coloured my room white. Digitally printed pieces had to be stowed away.
There was one small exception- block prints. Maybe because they are printed mostly on soft West Bengal cotton and follow an order of symmetry- they passed. In India, we are no strangers to their beauty (and geometry).100s of home linen brands have made a fortune selling jaal block printed bedsheets. So then what does it take to stand out? A certain @brigittesinghcollection aesthetic. After two years of missing each other I finally met her last week.
.
Franco- Indian Singh has been practicing block-printing in India for 42 years- in her own words, "I don't shuttle, India is my base." You know those bright red, Mughal miniature painting inspired poppies, copied several times over- those were, and are a Brigitte Singh original. A little outside of Jaipur, in a serene restored centuries old structure is her home/workshop. Much is to be said about her design lexicon-and I will in a larger story I am working on for a magazine, but for now I want to speak about her ethical practices. I've visited my fair share of weaving centres and workshops, but I haven't seen better working conditions than Singh's. Becuase she does work with stronger pigments, the workshop is ultra hygiene conscious with ample sunshine and follows a Canna-Lilly flower filtration system. Her waste water can pretty much be drunk after its treatment. To me, this is the essence of India-Modern.
