While humanity has only seen less than 10% of the ocean, our understanding of the ocean continues to improve. According to the recently released second World Ocean Assessment (WOAII), observations have substantially increased due to innovation in sensors and autonomous observation platforms as well as the expansion and improved coordination of regional observation programmes.
