He was an unlikely looking hero, with thick rimmed glasses and some fashion-defying hats, but he turned out to be one of the greatest race car designers in history. Ferrari took a chance on him straight out of college (his dad was a mechanic there) and never looked back: 54 Grand Prix wins, four Drivers Championships, seven Constructors Championships and countless iconic designs including putting the finishing touches to the 250 GTO. He was the only person who shouted back at Enzo Ferrari (“You’re not a proper engineer, you just have a pencil” is one famous quote) yet lasted there a record 28 years despite giving his notice three times.
