Happy 4th birthday, Roho! This brave little bull has already overcome so much. Roho was rescued from the Tsavo ecosystem in 2019. As our SWT/KWS Canine Unit headed to Tsavo West to track down two suspected poachers, they received a disturbing report: Not far from their location, a pilot had spotted a tiny elephant standing beside the body of his deceased mother atop a jagged lava hill. Thus began our story with Roho. We’re not sure why his mother chose to take him to such an inhospitable place, or how she passed away, but we can only surmise it was desperate bid to protect her baby from the poachers who had been sighted. While nothing can replace her, Roho has found a family and a future with us. He flourished at the Nursery, where he grew into a very spoiled bull — as these first three baby photos show! A little over a month ago, Roho graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, where he will ultimately reclaim his place in the wild. He has settled in wonderfully — and, dare we say, is again the most spoiled member of the herd.
