My grandmother had many scrolls. I'm sure most every Chinese person is familiar with these - they often hang on the walls of our homes and depict beautiful imagery of landscapes, nature, and folklore characters. My grandmother had many of these types of scrolls, but the ones I recall the most feature classic Chinese calligraphy. She was a Chinese Literature teacher in Taiwan and a great enthusiast of language, storytelling, and education. I have many memories of sitting with her in our backyard, trying to replicate her Chinese characters with a calligraphy brush and black ink paint. As the only child in her family who was able to get an education in China, and as a beloved teacher in Taiwan who maintained relations with many of her students, she always emphasized the importance of education, and had a particular love for language and literature.
This month, in honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, @oldnavy asked me to share an object within my family that holds great value. I chose this particular calligraphy scroll that belonged to my grandmother. It's signed with her maiden name, so I believe someone in her family painted it. It depicts an inscription from a stone tablet in The Temple of Confucius in the Shandong Province of China. Since it's written in ancient Chinese language, I'm not able to translate it, but the beauty of the calligraphy and the memory of seeing this particular scroll hang above my grandmother's bed reminds me of her and the values and traits she passed down to me -- most notably, a love and appreciation for language and literature. You can read the rest of the story on the @huffpost article #linkinbio
Can anyone read the characters? I'd love to know what it says!
