Many might ask why I care so much about changing this system for survivors. I mean I’m not exactly in a demographic that is necessarily considered high risk. As I walk down the street at night, pump gas in a not so secure area, or go to the bathroom alone, getting sexually assaulted is not ever something that I think about. A few years ago I had someone really close in my life go through a traumatic experience. Following this event, every single day I saw her life change forever. I remember the feeling of aloness she had, the feeling that no one supported her. I saw this pain rip through her like a knife through butter and sitting there without a single thing I could do to help her. For the first time in my life, I felt completely helpless. You see every statistic that you see on this, every decimal point in a percentage, every place on a ranking represents a real person. A person with their own story, their own family, and their own future. I know a lot of times we get caught up in the emotionlessness of numbers, and we forget just how much change can affect the lives of others. One year ago, I called my friend Jack Jordan, one of my closest friends, to tell him about my frustration. We talked together about the need to reshape how universities should handle sexual assault. After a long pause I remember him as clear as can be saying, we will get this done. One year later, we are standing here today to announce the introduction of the Student Sexual Full Support Prevention Partnership, the most comprehensive program ever created for collegiate survivors. What makes this program special? Through the use of focus groups, many of which were led by my friend @megan.hilliard , this program was specifically created by survivors, for survivors. With the introduction of this program 7 universities and 119,184 college students now have access to a brighter and more supportive future. Words cannot express my emotions, all I can say is - thank you.
