I had a bottle of 1978 Meerlust Estate Cab, courtesy of the winery, when I went out to South Africa in November 2015 (looking at you @chateau_dave), and it was beautiful. I hoped this might offer just a little bit of that same joy - even if it had been flown round the world and stored who-knows-where for three decades... and opening it with my mum (who took me to the Cape for my first Christmas - not as exotic as it sounds as we were living in Africa) was very special. The wine still has years ahead of it, with beautiful fruit alongside leather, umami and sousbois. Vibrant acidity, 12.5% alcohol and a supple, luxurious texture: cor, this is what wine is about.
