Shark Behavior: Checking! I had this male tiger shark check me on a dive yesterday. It’s not a common behavior that I’ve seen a whole lot of in tiger sharks, but males are more confrontational and assertive. This male tiger shark came surfing a wave towards the boat while I was on a charter. I saw him approaching under the bubbles and sunlight (a common approach for tigers) and swam at him to match his intensity coming at me. As you can see he turned away from me since I matched his energy but they do not always turn. Being aware and prepared for any behaviors, even intense ones such as this, is super vital when dealing with apex predators in their home. The sharks teach me every single day and I am constantly learning. Thankful for these interactions because they always make me respect these animals even more. Tiger sharks are amazing and capable apex predators in our oceans, however in this instance this tiger chose to not be aggressive towards me and further approach head on, moving pretty fast, and instead turned away respecting my space. I am humbled that I get to be in the water with these breathtaking animals and learn from them constantly. 🫶🏼 @oneoceandiving
