We've been showcasing some of our regulars who have helped make The Irish Rover what it is over the years in our #regularsoftherover series. Becky and Andy have had a seat at our bar for almost twenty years. They live within shouting distance and will look out of their upstairs window to see if the dinner rush has thinned out enough for them to make an appearance.
"I've lived in this neighborhood since I was twenty-five. We've been coming here for almost twenty years. We've been coming here since before we were married, we'd have dates here. We would always sit in the dining room at that little half booth, until we sat at the bar and then it kind of morphed into something. We realized more about what the place was. We liked sitting at the bar more, we got to know the bartenders and all that.
Gillooly and Turtle were bartending when we made the switch to the bar. We didn't talk to anybody for a long time because we're anti-social. I think after a while, Gillooly - we grew on him and he grew on us.
Michael Reidy, oh my God - one time, we were sitting at the end of the bar, and he was at the last seat. He looked like he was doing something so hard. working on serious tax papers or something, you know. He gets up and he looks over and me and Andy's like, 'he's doing a crossword.' It was the quietest we'd ever seen the guy. He was so intent. I'd never seen the man so intent, or like, not cursing.
She likes the smoked salmon and potato gratin, I like the lamb burger. It's a good burger, nobody knows how good the burgers are.
We live close enough that before we come here I can look out of our upstairs window and see the patio and be like, 'is it crowded?'
Sometimes we'll peek in the window and there will be a full bar so we'll just aimlessly walk up and down the road for like half an hour and come back.”
