Sticking with the Astro theme, here is a photo that was a complete mistake but worked out. I was really keen to shoot a lot of Astro while away but did hardly any. I didn’t do any location scouting before leaving. Once we arrived and set up camp at most locations I just could not have been bothered doing any scouting. Our days were very full on and tiring. Most days started between 6 and 7 in sub zero temps. The lowest was -8. It generally took between an hour and a half to two hours to get everyone up, a quick breakfast and packed up with trailer hitched up ready to go. Then we would drive from anywhere between 4 to 9 hours with an average day being about 6, including stops. So shooting Astro was not high on the list. It was also bloody freezing. All Astro I did do was shot right outside our camper, accept for this image. I drove 100m in our caravan park at Uluṟu to walk up the parks viewing sand dune. I woke at 3:30 to get the shot I wanted but it didn’t work out. I wanted to shoot a 2 hour long star trail behind Uluṟu. I take all my images as a single shot. So when composing the shot Uluṟu couldn’t be seen as it was too dark. Nothing was working, I mucked about for ages but gave in. So I just set up a shot for shits and giggles and went to my car to get warm. I was then going to go back up just before sunrise and get ready to shoot the sunrise. That didn’t happen either. I fell asleep and woke at 6:40 with sunrise at 7.
