🔸Did you know high quality bone broth is used almost universally in traditional cuisines from French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, African, South American, Middle Eastern and Russian? The use of Homeade bone broths to produce nourishing soups, stews, and sauces has almost disappeared from American cuisines (Ref. Nourishing Traditions Cookbook by Sally Fallon)
🔸Properly prepared bone broths are super nutritious & contain the minerals, cartilage, marrow, and vegetables as electrolytes. Adding just a little apple cider vinegar during cooking helps draw in the minerals including calcium, magnesium and potassium.
🔸Another great benefit of bone broth is it is loaded with collagen which is so important for our connective tissue which gives structure to our blood vessels, skin, organs, cartilage, muscles and bones. The collagen is obtained from amino acids, especially glycine which is required for our body to produce collagen. The good news is that properly prepared bone broth contains this important amino acid which helps our body in detoxification, muscle growth and regulation of our neurotransmitters affecting our mood.
🔸How do you make bone broth?
▪️1. Take raw or used bones from pasture raised animals. If using raw bones roast in oven at 350 degrees until brown. If using used cooked bones no need to roast first. I like adding 1-2 chicken feet if making chicken bone broth to get that extra gelatin loaded with collagen. Soak bones in large pot of filtered water and add about a TB of apple cider vinegar.
▪️2. Add rough cut up organic celery, carrots, onions, garlic cloves, black peppercorns, grated turmeric, sea salt or Celtic salt, herbs of choice (I like fresh basil, chives, and thyme).
▪️3. Bring to boil on stovetop and remove scum on top. Simmer on low for anywhere from 12 hours to 72 hours. Just before finishing add fresh parsley and simmer another 10 minutes.
▪️4. Let cool slightly and strain the broth into mason jars leaving about 2” room at top if freezing.
▪️5. Store in refrigerator up to 7 days or in freezer up to 1 year.
🔸Drinking just a cup of bone broth/ day can improve joint health, skin conditions, and gut health. Cheers!
