Following the try-out of the Ciné-concert Café Kuba, directed and performed by @david_shongo , a panel discussion wil be held by David Shongo, Bambi Ceuppens and Matthias De Groof. In line with Shongo’s Café Kuba, they will delve into the reality of today’s Kinshasa, and how the city functions as a living active memory, where past traumas are never simple history but an active framework through which the community makes sense of an uncertain future. David Shongo Congolese composer, visual artist, and researcher, David Shongo explores the interplay of sound, image, and memory. Founder of Studio 1960 and artistic director of the Festival Pianos de Kinshasa, his works address colonial legacies and technological evolution. In 2023, he became the first African composer invited to the Venice Biennale Musica. Bambi Ceuppens An anthropologist, curator, and academic, Bambi Ceuppens a senior researcher at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. Her work delves into Belgian-Congolese colonial history, Congolese popular culture, and diaspora studies. She has curated impactful exhibitions like Indépendance! and Congo Stars, and lectures at institutions including KASK Ghent and Sint-Lucas Antwerp. Matthias De Groof Filmmaker, scholar, and professor, Matthias De Groof specializes in African cinema and postcolonial film theory. A Fulbright and BAEF alumnus, he teaches at the University of Antwerp and is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Amsterdam.
