The Hollywood red carpet premiere of our @eastersunday movie is over and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t a dream come true. This entire journey so far has been magical. But more than any of this, I want to take a moment to not just thank @jokoy for the job he gave me - let’s face it, he could’ve chosen any number of brilliantly talented Pinoy actors to portray Tito Arthur - but I want the world to recognize just what he did for every Filipino, Asian American, person of color and underrepresented person out there. He pitched a story about his Filipino American family to ostensibly the greatest, most powerful filmmaker/producer ever, Steven Spielberg...and Jo scored big time. Think about it. In that meeting, Jo could have pitched ANYTHING to Amblin - something much more box office friendly that would be more appealing to the studio for instance. But instead, Jo Koy pitched a story about us. And they bought it. And they MADE it. In that meeting, Jo made a hero’s decision. Not many realize that’s what that was. I hope now you do. So thank you, Jo. But now it’s out of Jo’s hands, our hands, and the studio’s hands, folks. We hand off the film to you, the world. The best way you can show any semblance of support, gratitude or desire to see more of these stories is to show up at the theaters and BUY your tickets! Get your family and friends to go as well. When we show up and pay to watch a film that reflects a beautifully diverse America and all we have in common, Hollywood will meet the demand by producing more projects created by, starring and written for us. It’s that simple. And every single person whether Filipino or not can have a hand in this movement.
