Nearly a decade ago, I took this photo in Richmond, just moments before photographing a couple’s engagement session. It was a quiet, still summer day—just before the Fourth of July. There was no breeze, no movement, only silence. And then, out of nowhere, a single gust of wind swept through. The flagpole began to sing, its metal humming softly, almost reverently. I looked up—and there it was. The American flag, caught mid-motion, shaped like a heart against the sky.
It was beautiful. And unforgettable.
Today, on Memorial Day, that moment means more to me than ever. That unexpected wind felt like a whisper from those who came before us—those who gave their lives so that we could celebrate love, freedom, and ordinary days filled with extraordinary meaning.
We remember them—not only with flags and ceremonies, but with hearts full of gratitude. Their courage shaped our nation. Their sacrifice gave us the sky under which we stand free.
We remember. We honor. We are forever grateful.
