Years before Roe was overturned, one woman had a radical idea: ship abortion pills from abroad to every corner of the U.S.
Her name is Dr. Rebecca Gomperts.
Her organization is @AidAccess.
And they still send safe abortion pills to all 50 states.
In the late 90s, Dr. Gomperts traveled around the world by boat as Greenpeace’s resident doctor. In countries where abortion was illegal, she met woman after woman whose health and safety had been upended by unsafe abortions.
Which gave her an idea.
She could sail her *own* boat, set up a mobile abortion clinic aboard – and bring safe, effective pills to women who needed them.
So Gomperts launched Women on Waves.
Women on Waves was a floating abortion clinic that traveled to places where abortion was illegal. Aboard, Gomperts and her team provided abortion pills to women who could safely take them once they reached dry land.
Opponents cracked down.
When Women on Waves sailed to Morocco, Gomperts herself docked to spread the word in a country where abortion was illegal. She was accosted by anti-abortion protestors. And Moroccan police boats chased Women on Waves out of its waters.
But Gomperts was undeterred.
On a trip to Portugal, Gomperts' mobile clinic was not allowed to dock. So she took her message to a Portuguese talk show instead. That’s when she realized: she could reach more people on the Internet than a boat.
Instead of delivering abortion pills from the sea, Gomperts' team began to use the Internet to *mail* pills around the globe.
Her team is still at work today. They’re called Aid Access – and they send abortion pills all over the world after a quick online consultation. It costs just around $150.
It’s important to remember: Aid Access can take weeks to ship pills, so order them as early in your pregnancy as possible to guarantee they’ll be effective.
Dr. Rebecca Gomperts is a hero. Aid Access will save lives. And if you’ve been fired up to fight back this week, spread the word about what they do. Because no matter what the Supreme Court says, Americans can STILL get an abortion in all 50 states.
