Diego Rivera created “Pan American Unity” (1940) in front of a live audience at the Golden Gate International Exposition, a world’s fair held on Treasure Island. In the mural, he imagined America—both Mexico and the United States—as a locus of shared creativity and innovation, with a panoramic view of San Francisco at the center. “He was an amazing storyteller. And all of the little thoughts per square inch, tell a grand story,” said Bay Area artist Michael Ríos.
