A little job update, that I’ve been meaning to do for some time...
A few months ago, I started a new job training to become a sub-specialist in gynae cancer surgery. This is a job that I’ve wanted for literally 10 years. I’m learning to perform complex gynae surgery for ovarian, endometrial (womb), cervical, vulva & vaginal cancers. There are only 27 gynaecological cancer centres in the UK, where such surgery can be performed due to the intense training required, plus the need for specialist facilities & equipment & collaboration with other specialties including oncologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, dieticians, physios, psychologists and more.
I am still involved in treating some benign gynae conditions including endometriosis, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids & we talk a lot about menopause & fertility, but I don’t do any Obstetrics in my new role, which means no more babies!
My last shift on labour ward was Christmas Eve night, alongside none other than Mr Gynae Geek. A fond memory to look back on!
The job is both physically & psychologically demanding & each one of my bosses is a world-renowned expert in the field of gynae cancers, so imposter syndrome moments come thick & fast, but I’m honoured to be taught & guided by such a talented team. Gynae cancer surgery was typically a male-dominated speciality but I’m lucky to have 3 incredibly feisty female bosses who inspire me every day. There is one other gynae cancer surgical trainee in the department called Stacey (Picture 2) who is a huge support to me & it’s the first time our hospital has had 2 females filling both roles.
Fun fact: We’re both less than 5’2”
We may both have to stand on a step to operate, but we bring a lot of energy to the table & are hopefully inspiring some of our junior colleagues, who work very hard alongside us to help us keep our patients safe & well.
