This Journey Momma 2020 33.5 x 52 in This piece was the first in my track and field series. It was the catalyst to my emphasizing the poetic significance of black people running and how it relates to The Great Migration. How does the participation of Black Americans in 50’s and 60’s track and field influence understanding of the idealized American identity? And, How does the history of Jim Crow and the Fugitive Slave Act affect our understanding of Black dominance in track and field? I’m still working on this series and many more questions have been asked than answered. I guess that’s a good thing.
