A journey towards self discovery.
I’ve learned a lot about myself over the past few weeks, both on a personal and physical level. While I graduated last October with my master’s in education, I’ve decided to continue the learning process this year outside of the classroom, and here’s how I intend to do it.
Last summer, I was standing on the shore of Lake Ontario with @p_hair_cardinal, looking out at the vast expanse of water and I said to him, "hey man, this looks just like the ocean." An ocean I miss so much. Being separated from the salt has been the hardest part of adjusting to my life as a Canadian.
Then, my brain skipped a few steps, as it usually does. I’ve been searching for a way to enter into the world of multi day adventures and expeditions and that massive expanse of water stretched out before me gave me a pretty ridiculous idea. I turned to Pierre and said, "dude, I’m gonna paddle this." With a very worried and skeptical look on his face, he asked, "how much of it?"
To which I responded, ”all of it."
I haven’t let go of the idea since. I’ve spent months planning and plotting, studying weather patterns and water flow charts, trying to learn as much as possible about my new Canadian playground. I’ve been training my body to get as prepared as I can to embark on an adventure that excites me, scares me, but mostly, ignites my curiosity into exploring where my personal limits lie.
In late August, I’ll be starting in Burlington, Ontario and paddling my kayak back to Montreal. I have no idea if I’ll make it, but that’s what really drives me to want to do this. I’ll be spending the next four months training heavily, honing safety skills, and learning as much as I can about multi day adventures from the community that surrounds me. Thank you to those of you who have already provided me with the wisdom and confidence I need to get this project done.
I’ll also be using this adventure to raise money for YMCA youth programs in Montreal. More on that later as the campaign develops.
So, here goes nothing. Onwards I go towards a personal journey to learn more about myself and this beautiful country I now call home. 🍁
Never stop learning. ✌️
