Today is the anniversary of the death of the great Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). This VERY tiny self portrait (about the size of a postage stamp!) is one of a number of his works on display in our Print Gallery at the moment, part of the free exhibition Dutch Drawings: highlights from the Rijksmuseum. In his early 20s, he made a series of these tiny self-portraits - he pulled faces in the mirror and recorded what he saw on an etching plate, thus teaching himself how to depict different emotions, and how to show how light fell on the features of the face! Also in the exhibition are a number of studies of his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh (1612-1642). His drawings of her are especially poignant - their first three children sadly died in infancy and Saskia herself died of tuberculosis aged 30, when their fourth child, Titus, was less than a year old. Find more of Rembrandt’s works in today’s Story, and visit the exhibition in our Print Gallery until 6 November – admission free.
